I work at a place synonymous with “Well known Shoes”. As a Sales Associate part of my job description is to greet and assist customers. I am REQUIRED to do this with every person who comes through the door, as well as run around the store and check up on the customers every few minutes. To be honest, I do get somewhat sick of essentially repeating myself a lot, but for each and every customer I try to mix it up a bit. For example, I’ll tell one customer “if you need any help, just let me know”, tell another customer “feel free to ask me anything if you have a question”, and another “my associates and i are walking around the store at all times if you need anything.” I think I do a good job of saying just-about-the-same-thing-but-still-different-enough… but apparently not.

I approached a woman who had been in the store with her daughter for some time. She had a large backpack and was looking at our sparkly black Sperry’s, something that people try to steal from our store rather frequently. I approached her, attempting to do customer service and loss prevention simultaneously by engaging her and letting her know that I’m aware of what she’s looking at and her presence in the store.

The conversation goes something like this:

Robin: Hello ma’am, I see you’re looking at our Sparkly Black Sperry’s! I really like those. I notice you’ve got the Navy sequin Sperry’s on! You must be a fan of the brand, me too. :)
Lady: …
Robin: Could I maybe assist you in finding your size? (She had been staring at the section for awhile without selecting anything.)
Lady: …
Robin: Okay ma’am, well if there’s anything I can help you with, please let me know.
Lady: (Turns suddenly to face me) I’ve heard you say that to EVERY person in the store. You’re really annoying, you know that? Fuck off and go bother someone else.

Needless to say I was pretty shocked. I am an easy going person with a very nonthreatening, youthful appearance. Most customers see me as being sweet and very helpful. It completely blew me out of the water when this lady said this to me. Apparently this was a common thing with this woman as her daughter didn’t even blink an eye or seem embarrassed when her mom said this to me. At the same time, I considered for a moment that this woman could be a thief; it’s not uncommon for thieves to make associates leave them alone, or scare them off, in order to have their window of opportunity to stuff some shoes in their bag. This could’ve been a way for her to get me away from her, but instead, I swallowed my shock and thought up a reply. Trust me, I get tired of having to say this to everyone too, but it’s in my job description… and I told her just that.

Robin: Well, ma’am, I’m really sorry you feel that way, but I’m just trying to assist you. Helping customers is part of my job.
Lady: Well you fucking suck at your job. Can’t you tell when you’re bothering people?
Robin: Ma’am, this was my first time speaking to you. I didn’t mean to offend you, I just wanted to make sure you were getting help if you needed it.
Lady: I DON’T NEED YOUR HELP. I heard you say that to EVERYONE ELSE!! Will you GO AWAY?? I want your Manager NOW, your Manager needs to know about how badly I’m being treated.
Robin: Yes ma’am. I’ll be right back.

Of course, I go to get my Manager. Before bringing him back to the woman, I give him a brief overview of the situation. He laughs, and says “that’s funny, you’re just doing what I told you to do”. My Manager is pretty unforgiving of unruly customers and puts them in their place the majority of the time, so I felt kind of bad for the lady. This wasn’t going to turn out the way she wanted.

*Robin returns with Manager*
Robin: Ma’am, this is my Manager, ____.
Manager: What seems to be the problem here?
Lady: Your employee is getting on my nerves by asking to help me!! I hear her saying that to everyone in here and it gets old quick. I don’t want to hear her anymore, she’s a bad employee and pesters paying customers.
Manager: So she offered you help and has been offering others help?
Lady: YES! a LOT!
Manager: I’m sorry Ma’am, but that’s her job and that’s exactly what I’ve told her to do. If you don’t like it, you can leave at any time. I don’t tolerate anyone, customer or not, making a scene in my store!

So, after screaming about calling our district manager and regional manager and having me and my manager fired, she finally left the store with her daughter and we haven’t seen her since.

tl;dr a potential thief screams and cusses at me for offering her assistance, calling me ‘annoying’, gets my manager, and my manager tells her ‘it’s her job’ . the lady leaves pissed and without having bought anything.

oh my god this happened to me once! I don’t think she was a thief, just someone with low tolerance to mildly annoying shit. But she kirked out on me SO BAD. My boss cracked up. “So she yelled at you for doing your job? Good one.”

Well this makes a childhood favorite look incredibly depressing.

Due to some legal troubles, I had to delete all past posts. I’m waiting to hear from Tumblr if the new format for the latest post is legally alright. If it’s not, this blog is going to get suspended =(. If it is, I’ll be putting old posts with the new format up again.

While I have the chance, I’d like to say a few words about what I have learned about [insert Clothing website’s name] pricing strategy:

1) Most things will be priced fairly when the brand name is made public on the website and the same dress or top etc is easy to find on the brand’s own website.

2) The harder things are to find, the more overpriced they are.

3) For items that are especially cute or awesome, there’s often an additional $10 or $20 added to the price for no reason whatsoever.

I actually love [insert Clothing website’s name]’s selection and think their customer service is outstanding. I’d gladly pay $10 more for that customer service if they were open about their pricing and their brands. If they gave me a chance to compare prices, I’d most likely end up choosing them consciously for their better shipping options and superior customer service, even though they are more expensive. But I’d like to at least have the option to compare.

The whole hiding it stuff is what drives me up the wall and makes me feel they are ripping people off.

They’ve come up with an excuse to shut this blog down, all because they can’t have it that a small minority of their customers might save a few bucks on something somewhere else and they don’t want to change their pricing strategy or at least admit to it.

And now for the good part: How to find all this stuff yourself.

HOW TO FIND THE BRAND OF YOUR ITEM.

1) You can search[insert Clothing website’s name] for a brand name, and all items from that brand will show up in the search.

This is how I started out. Gobbling together brand names from online forums and Facebook and posted reviews, then searching the website and identifying that brand’s items, then looking for the brand on other websites online. Slowly, this built up to a list of brands to search for. I once spent about two days searching every single brand name I could think of to find one single dress that I wanted and didn’t know the designer of…

2) There are shopping websites out there that have most of [insert Clothing website’s name] inventory listed with DESIGNER NAMES ATTACHED TO THEM (best discovery EVER).

This is how I can pretty much instantly tell you the brand of what you’re looking for. Wish I had found out about them when the blog first started out.

For older stuff: Fashionspace.com

For newer stuff: canaryrook.com

divinecaroline.com

Best one, regularly updated: clozette.co

(I should probably not post this here, but I have no idea how else to do it.)

Just search for the name of your dress/top/shoe, and watch the magic happen. New items take a couple days to show up.

3) If either of those options fail, and the dress (or top, etc) has something special on it like, e.g., lighthouses, google for that, e.g. “Blue lace top lighthouses”. It might show up.

HOW TO FIND YOUR ITEM ELSEWHERE.

1) Google the brand name (+ keywords, e.g. “green wrap dress”) and check the retailer’s website, if there is one.

Find the name of your dress/top/shoe/etc and then google for that one again combined with the brand name, for better results.

If you find your item on another website for a similar price, bookmark it and come back again and again to check for potential sales.

2) Many retailers don’t even have Brand Names in search results. (Lulus, Shopruche, I’m looking at you).

Unfortunately, the only way to find things on there is to manually scroll through everything, or enter keywords of what your item looks like. There are many websites that carry the same brands as [insert Clothing website’s name], just google for similar sites to [insert Clothing website’s name] and then go through them and with time, you’ll have an idea of where to look first for a specific brand.

3) If all the above options fail, try Google Reverse Image Search. Apparently some people think this is how I find things, but I don’t. I actually only tried it a couple times with not a lot of success. You can still try though.
